主人公Nathan Flomm（Larry David）是一家新创办的电动车公司的营销主管，与老板（Jon Hamm）大吵一架后遭到解雇，颜面扫地。10年之后，他的婚姻完了，事业也毁了，他只能改名换姓（新名字叫做Rolly DaVore），在马萨诸塞州海岸外的一座小岛上过着简朴的生活。但他的前老板也来到岛上装修度夏别墅，Nathan发誓要抓住机会进行报复。Bill Hader扮演Rolly的一个朋友，是一个露天矿场的老板。Phillip Baker Hall扮演岛上一个建筑项目的工头McKenzie，一开始雇佣了Rolly，但很快后悔了。Kate Hudson扮演Nathan Flomm主要对手的妻子，但Flomm和她发展出特殊的关系。Michael Keaton扮演矿场的经营者，性格怪异。Danny McBride扮演岛上居民Frank，是Rolly的好友。Eva Mendes扮演一个对Rolly言听计从的当地居民，时常给Rolly带来麻烦。Amy Ryan扮演前女友Wendy，对Rolly隐瞒了一个重要秘密。JB Smoove扮演当地一个女孩的前男友，怪罪Rolly是他们分手的主要原因。
