喜欢恶作剧的少年尼尔斯自从惹怒了妖精之后身体就被变小了，之后那些曾经被他欺负过的动物们就开始整天追着他跑。一个偶然的机会，尼尔斯跟宠物仓鼠骑着鹅逃了出去，他们跟着一群大雁开始了全国旅行，在这个过程中尼尔斯逐渐拥有了勇气和责任感，慢慢地成长了起来。这部动画的原作是瑞典作家塞尔玛·拉格洛芙所作的儿童文学作品，同时这也是从龙之子出身的布川郁司所设立的Studio Pierrot的第一部作品，监督由鸟海永行担任。另外负责美术的中春光毅根据从瑞典拍来的外景将北欧的自然景色很好地描绘了出来。
