The Preying Mantis

The Mantis Parable is the charming tale of a humble caterpillar trapped in a bug collector's jar and in need of a helping hand.

When the chances of winning the heart of a newslady are slimmed by a wealthy rival of his, a caring yet clumsy college professor creates a love potion from the DNA of a praying mantis. However, a lack of testing mutates him into an insectoid monster that can only be stopped by the professor's friends as well as 2 hectic detectives, before the hateful vice principal finds everything out.

Ah Chi (Ka-Yan Leung) is obsessed with the martial arts and, more often than not, his kung-fu clowning gets him into trouble. Ending up facing Hsia (Eddie Ko) of the notorious Jade Brotherhood is inevitable. As a result, Hsia forces Chi's martial arts master to expel him. Masterless and working for a fish vendor, Chi meets a crafty kid (Yat Lung Wong), whose uncle Chow Tung (Chin Yuet Sang) is a master of the Insane Mantis style. The Jade Brotherhood aims for control of the small town but Chi is training with a new Master and will not accept bullies in the neighbourhood.

Trixi Jancik leads a risky double life. At home, she is an obedient housewife. But when she puts on a disguise and goes to the racetrack to indulge in her secret passion, she catches a glimpse of a better life. A cicada is resting high on a tree. It is chirping for all it’s worth and drinking in the dew, oblivious of a mantis behind. The mantis, bending over and arching up its front leg, is going to catch the cicada but does not know that there is an oriole beside it. The bird has stretched out its neck, ready to peck at the mantis. Again the oriole is unaware that a weasel is sneaking up to it. The three creatures all covet gains ahead without being aware of an imminent danger behind.

Hsiao Hai (Ting Wa-Chung) is a kung-fu servant of the big boss (Lung Fei). Bullied and abused, he finds himself taken under the wing of the boss when he stops some troublemakers rising in status. Hsiao Hai begins to learn the boss's dreaded chicken fist and also falls in love with a girl, Shao Hua, who works at a food stall. Shao Hua and her father are mantis-fist experts and inform Hsiao that his boss is not the upstanding man he appears to be.

When a big storm destroys Milo's Snack Shack, he doesn't know what to do and that includes just talking to God about it. Milo thinks he has to get God's attention in order for God to hear him. Milo finally learns to pray and realizes that God has been helping him all along. Then ironically sees that all the things he was using to get God's attention are the very things he needs to rebuild his Snack Shack. The garden learns an important lesson about how to trust God after we pray and that God's answers come in many different forms.
